Dissolved oxygen in the water is an essential element for the proper balance of the pond (degradation of organic matter by oxidation, oxygen essential for aquatic animals for their respiration).

Water lilies and lotuses, in addition to their ornamental role, serve as surface vegetation for the pond and also help to capture phosphates (PO4), which is detrimental to unwanted algae.
